Few shows are quite as popular as HBO\'s epic megahit

. And with so many TV watchers tuning in every Sunday to see the adventures of Westeros, fans have developed quite the fondness for certain characters. With

ending in just two short seasons, we\'ve begun to wonder which of our fan favorites will be making it out of the series alive. Luckily, we just got some new information regarding George R.R. Martin\'s original intentions for the characters, and it may hint at how the HBO series may end.

Tech Insider recently got ahold of a letter which George R.R. Martin wrote when pitching his series of novels to a publisher in 1993. Originally planned as a trilogy of novels, Martin explained how the series would be ending with his third book, and which of the main characters would survive it all.

Five central characters will make it through all three volumes, however, growing from children to adults and changing the world and themselves in the process. In a sense, my trilogy is almost a generational saga, telling the life stories of these five characters, three men and two women. The five key players are Tyrion Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen, and three of the children of Winterfell, Arya, Bran, and the bastard Jon Snow.

There we go, ladies and gents. Now we know which characters are most likely going to make it out when the dust clears on

. But what does this mean for the other characters?

Perhaps the most surprising is the idea that Sansa Stark would somehow not make it out of the great game. After seeing the oldest Stark daughter suffer at the hands of the Boltons and Lannisters for years, it was refreshing to see her come into power in Season 6. So Sansa somehow ending up dead at the end of

would be truly heartbreaking and perhaps the final straw for advocates who are sick of seeing Sansa consistently victimized.

Of course, the above list doesn\'t necessarily mean that the HBO series will follow the same ending. George R.R. Martin\'s novels have certainly changed since 1993, with the series being heavily expanded beyond three books. In the same letter, both Sansa and Arya\'s plots were explained, and they are seriously different than both the books and TV show. Arya was supposed to make it back to Winterfell after Ned\'s execution, and Sansa was going to give birth to Joffrey\'s child. Since neither of these plot points came remotely close to fruition, it\'s safe to say that the "final five" may not either.
