Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev have suggested that their characters on The Vampire Diaries could begin a relationship.

Somerhalder and Dobrev, who play Damon and Elena, told E! Online that they don't know what will happen in the second season.

"We're still curious ourselves," Somerhalder explained. "I kind of got a little gist... [executive producer] Kevin Williamson was discussing a bit of next season and they have a pretty good idea of what they're doing up until the first half of that season. And there's some cool stuff."

Somerhalder added that his character may be concerned about a relationship with Elena because his brother Stefan (Paul Wesley) is currently dating her.

"Damon loves his brother," he said. "Of course he does. Just like Stefan - Stefan could have let Damon die like, five times. Of course he loves his brother. But it will be interesting to see the varying degrees of that love... When you mix the love of a woman with the love of a brother, things get a little hairy."

Somerhalder also said that "hopefully one day" Damon and Elena will kiss, while Dobrev added: "I'm sure [in] however many years that we do the show... maybe down the line."

The first season finale of The Vampire Diaries aired in the US last night. The show continues on Tuesday at 9pm on ITV2 in the UK.
