Eunhyuk was born Lee Hyuk-jae in Neunggok, Goyang, Gyeonggi. In 1999 when he turned thirteen, he auditioned for SM Entertainment through the company's Starlight Casting System with childhood friend Xiah. Xiah was selected to sign a contract with the company soon after, but Eunhyuk failed the audition. He auditioned again the following tahun and was finally selected through showcasing his rapping and dancing abilities.
