I agree with RulerL0rd, but even though I believe Balrogs are intelligent, Sauron is MUCH more cunning and manipulative. As I see the question does not state that the two are head to head fighting, I also believe Sauron would try to deal with the Balrog, before violence.

Sauron would take the Balrog out by his mind. Sauron is just too clever.

Oh, AND, Sauron isn't really just a maiar anymore. With the ring, his expirience and training, he surpasses the power of a maiar. That is why Gandalf can't just take him out. (Or saruman, ragdastin, or apollo etc).

Hmm...I wonder how badly i spelt those names :P

Well, I just read the question again more carefully, and i saw the could. This is a window of opportunities as anyone COULD win, but who is more likely or who WOULD win. I believe anyone could win, but sauron would win for my above reasons.

Well, Gandalf defeated the balrog in the end, but I don't think he could take Sauron, or he would have openly challenged him and not sent Frodo and his other friends into peril. Following that logic, if the balrog couldn't beat Gandalf, and Gandalf couldn't beat Sauron, I don't believe the balrog could beat Sauron.

csistokes and alexapetrelli u dom sauron is way stronger even in the fellowship of the ring saruman says "u did not think that hobbit could contend the wil of sauron THERE ARE NON WHO CAN." and by the way csistokes the balrog can't breath fire, it can only make fire in his mouth and alexapetrelli it's not all about size u dom dur dur dur.
