My idea of how he got to be mad? I think more on the Twisted Burton-Side of things. In my fics, he poisoned himself after the Horunvendush Day in a suicide attempt, but failed and just ended up really sick.

Hmmm I was thinking along the lines that maybe the red queen totured him and seeing his whole village go up in flames kinda made him mad, and before that he was the life of a party yet silly and sane... but now hes half bonkers and half silly! And I plan on reading your fanfic!!!

Well, the point Disney makes is mercury poisoning, which would definitely push him out of his tree a little. Then watching your family get flattened by a dragon-thing would send anyone out of their tree and running around the park.

of course the mercury had effects on him (like his hair or his eyes) but watching how your whole family is murdered and your homevillage destroyed... well I think that affected him more in his psyche. (so his darker self was born? o.O)

but the idea of poisening himself was another of me^^

It was mercury poisoning, and he say his family and home go up in flames from the Jabberwocky. Seeing your whole family die would probably make anyone go crazy.

I think, it was when the Jabberwokky killd his clan. And plus it was because of mercury, which hatters are used to use for making hats. It's poisonous and a lot of hatters went mad in the old times.

I know about the whole Horunvendush Day, and thinking about it always makes me depressed. Poor Tarrant!!! So yeah, I agree, I think that has something to do with it. And of course the mercury poisoning also made his brain all whacky. But I also think Alice contributed a bit to his insanity. I think the Hatter became extremely depressed after she left for the first time. I could just imagine him waiting for her everyday. Thats why he was so excited when she came back at the age of 19. I feel so bad for the hatter, in a way, he kinda reminds me of Sweeney Todd. But anyways, I wish I could just give him a huge hug and make him feel better :D <3
