Shibuya 109 has been so boring. I miss the gyaru era. lol
omg i thought the exact same thing when i’ve seen the visuals!
At that time fashion seemed so much fun and fashion trends where so much bolder and attractive!! Gyaru was what was i looking up the most but basically it was like a huge peak of the WHOLE japanese fashion suburban fashion scene with so many trends&movements popping up from so much diverse backgrounds..!
Japanese sub-fashion is such a yawnfest now, and imo there’s no wonder Korea landed the leadership of fashion trends in Pacific Asia since few years now…
“Japanese (sub-)fashion is such a yawnfest now, and imo there’s no wonder Korea landed the leadership of fashion trends in Pacific Asia since few years now…”
Korea really knows how to play the aesthetics game.
While I did love the Gyaru era, I don’t think I’d want to go back to it.
But it’s been definitely a snoozefest on the J-fashion front recently (and covering it hasn’t been easy).
Really hope something innovative comes along.
I miss the attitude that came with it. Egg magazine used to print “WILD & TOUGH” on their covers as a tag line – it’s from Amuro Namie’s song Chase the Chance in ’95 and that was the mantra of late 90s early 00s gyaru. Nowadays girls are more demure, less outspoken than during the gyaru era. Wild and tough are seen as ‘dirty.’
I think there’s a silent strength type thing going on with Japanese women. They’re more proud of what makes them Japanese, but aren’t push overs.
Misha Janette wrote a interesting article about it on her blog:
I see what the author is coming from. I’m all for women trying to find their own beauty and tbh as i much i loved gyaru as a FASHION movement/trend, its endorsement of the western beauty standards over japanese ones (bleached hair, ehanced bigger eyes, etc…) which was actually the essence of this trend (=going against the rules and breaking traditional beauty standards) paradoxally brushed me the wrong way… It was like these girls were trying to escape ‘regressive’ beauty standards to eventually fall even harder into other ones (as ‘progressive’ they may appear in the first place)…
That being said, as much i’m glad whenever women can take some pride about what makes their beauty unique without mimicking western beauty trends, i’m not conviced about the potential breakthrough of this “Nadeshiko” trend. I like Yuka Manami but short bangs and very long hair is not enough to make her outstanding or ‘unique’.. Maybe there’s still a little step to go further and see what kind of new-ness can this ‘neo-traditional’ trend actually bring to the table.

LOL even Arashi’s Matsumoto Jun has said that he isn’t very fond of the ‘gyaru talk’ and in my opinion, that says a lot about the gyaru in general. As an asian myself I prefer japanese women to be typical japanese and be strong in their own way…NOT western wild & tough way.
I’m never fond of the gyaru trend and was glad that the ‘era’ has ended.
It would be nice to keep the attitude, lose the look.
Who the fuck cares what that disgusting pig thinks lol.
Mhm, me too! Their fashion was never for me, but I always admired their style and attitude. “egg” was my favourite magazine when I was a kid/teenager, but my parents would never let me buy my own copy! xd
They all look the same at first glance and the over-all concept seems so bland :|
