and here is why. the "egg" refers not only to those things chickens lay with the shells. The term egg (or ovum) is one which refers to any female gamete or sex cell. Animals have been on this planet for billions of years in some form or another and they have one thing in common, the females have eggs. Whether these eggs are to be layed (fertilised or otherwise) in the case of birds, fish, reptiles etc. or are fertilsed and have have the young grow inside the mother for mammals.
now onto chickens, unless chicken were the very first animal species to arrive on this planet (which they were not) eggs were around first
