rats are fastidiously clean creatures who don't smell. They wash themselves almost constantly and can be toilet trained. In their cages they will reserve 2 toilet areas... one for urine and one for poo. They can even be easily trained to use a litter tray. I had a rat that was free all the time and she started using the cat's little tray for her number two's and a small cardboard box in the corner for her urine. This meant she made no mess at all.
