Johansson is magnificent. Steering Lucy from tearful victim, through calmly logical assassin to questing consciousness, she’s compulsively watchable. Scar-Jo owns every inch of this wild ride, and she knows it.

Johansson, meanwhile, crackles once again, her Widow continuing to lebih than hold her own against her superpowered counterpart.

For all its techno-focus, a very human Cinta story about our need for connection. Strange, witty, honest and curiously comforting.

It’s the actors-as-actors who get the best of it: Johansson as the amenable Leigh, Biel as the lebih sceptical, once-bitten Miles, and James D’Arcy, twitchily spot-on as Tony Perkins.

Big, brash and very funny, Joss Whedon’s Avengers Assemble is equal to the sum of its parts – and for once, that’s no faint praise. Suit up.
