I has to be rue, because without Katniss's dad's death, Katniss wouldent be as strong and smart, because it is having to keep her family alive that gave her the skills needed to win.

I think that if Katniss' dad had died, Katniss wouldn't have had to hunt to survive and keep her family there with her, so she wouldn't have lasted long at all in the Games. Besides, as the readers, we never really learned that much about Katniss' dad, while with Rue pretty much everyone that read the story loved her. And Rue didn't have a long life, like somebody above said (I forget who) Katniss' dad was probably in his 30's or 40's while Rue was only 12 years old.

if we saved rue then she would just have to die again later because they couldnt both win, katniss and peeta only both won becasue they were going to kill themselves if they couldnt be together

I think I actually prefer Katniss' dad. He seems like such a nice guy. As much as I love him though, he isn't right for this story. He doesn't fit in with the plot. Rue, although she's better dead as well, could have worked for the rest of the series. Don't get me wrong, I like Rue, but sometimes it's necessary for a character to die, to help move to plot along. I should know, being a writer myself.

It's the same with Harry Potter. As much as I love Albus (in the books) and Severus, I wouldn't have chosen to resurrect either of them, because it doesn't do anything good for the plot. They both needed to die, and I have accepted that, no matter how sad I am about it.

if katniss's dad didn't die she would not have hunting skills then she probably wouldn't have won the hunger games then there would not be a rebellion and they would just be stuck in that awful world full of hatrid and wrong people with that tenacious,ugly,and evil president snow

I picked Rue because I think even though she misses him, Katniss can get along fine without her dad. If he had lived, I think, the entire series would not be the same.

For some reason, I think of Rue as like, 7 or 8.

Katniss' dad was just doing his job, and he knew he could die from it. Rue, on the other hand, was forced into the Games; and she didn't have a choice whether to do it or not. I guess her dad didn't either, but at least he didn't die because of murder.

Without Katniss' father's death, she would have never learned to become a survivor and rely on herself. Without Rue's death in the 74th Games, she wouldn't have realized the depths of the Capitol's evil and how corrupt they were. You can't save any. Technically, Katniss is the only one who should have made it out of the Games alive. But they needed their victor, even if that meant having two, so Katniss and Peeta both won.

From then on, rebellion and war ensued. Don't you fans see that this isn't a pick-and-choose series? All but one dies in these Games---that's the rules. You people care so much that a favorite died that you'll go to any ridiculous lengths to see them resurrect for some reason, even if it means a fourth book that turns the entire series to shit. -_-

Even without considering how each survival would alter the story, I think most people would choose Rue because of how young she was. She'd barely lived. Also, we'd seen more of her in the story so people tend to like her more.
