Then he meets Lionel Logue - an Australian commoner. Who calls him Bertie, and gets past all of Bertie's defenses. Lionel challenges him, encourages him, and meets him on equal footing. By the time Bertie does reluctantly become King and accept his role, Lionel is right there by his side.
So many wonderful moments in this movie between them:
* Showdown between Bertie & the Archbishop (re: Lionel)- made all the more poignant because Bertie had already found out that Lionel was not an accredited "doctor," but valued him so much that he overrode the strong advice that was dictated to him and made his own decision regarding who he wanted as his speech therapist. The look of surprise and fondness on Logue's face in that scene was touching.
* Lionel and Bertie during the coronation rehearsal - Colin and Geoffrey were splendid!
* Lionel/Bertie during the pre-war speech - "Say it to me as a friend."
* Bertie shaking Lionel's hand and putting his other hand on Lionel's shoulder, addressing him as "My friend." Lionel smiles proudly and calls him "Your Majesty"
* Elizabeth threatens to knock their heads together if they don't quickly excuse themselves and talk themselves back into their friendship. She's clearly supportive of their close friendship and knows that her husband needs Lionel in his life.
* Lionel hiding like a coward, and Bertie shoving him out of hiding ... just as Lionel, through his help and support, allowed Bertie to step out of hiding.
* "Waiting for a king to apologize ...."
* First meeting - "Waiting for me to commence a conversation ...."
* The final glance between the two men before Bertie and his family step onto the balcony to wave to the crowd ... and Lionel's proud gaze as he watches from the background
LOL @ this dialogue:
Lionel: "Turn the hesitations into pauses and say to yourself 'God save the King.'"
Bertie: "I say that all the time only nobody appears to be listening."
Lionel: "Pauses add solemnity to occasions."
Bertie: "Then I'm the solemnest king that ever lived."
Also the relationship between George and His daughters was wonderfully showed.
The dialogue is just so well written it's untrue.
