I saw someone get upset about it on this spot so I wanted to poll.

I don't think it's offensive because it's an inclusive way to refer to all LGBT people plus those not included in the acronym - asexuals, intersexuals, people without a gender, people who just don't fit other labels. I think it's a good word for that reason.

And I do understand that some people use it as insult, but I think it's only offensive if you let it be. All you have to do is say "hell yes I'm a queer" when someone calls you one and bam, they can't use it as an insult against you anymore because now you own it. It's a positive word anyway.

Personally, I don't think it is. But some people still might think so.

It all depends on how you use it. For the most part, I don't have a problem with it. C;

It depends on how you take it, is a made up name in my opinion. Like gay, lesbian and the rest, just names that society invented to tag people who're different.

It rubs me the wrong way. Probably because I've never actually heard it said in a way that wasn't vicious.

queer is a slur BUT it's only offensive if non-queer people use. queer people reserve the right to reclaim it and it's their choice if they want to use it to describe themselves (although even if reclaimed some people can still be uncomfortable with it so they shouldn't use it on others without their consent)

Back in the 18'th, 19'th and early 20'th centuries the word Queer used to mean unusual or bizarre. Some back then also used to say "Here take some of this queer money" which in this context meant fake or counterfeit. Then it evolved into a derogatory word when attacking someone for their sexual orientation.

It's like the word Gay for instance, it original meaning means, to be happy and joyous. But nowadays is used to label certain members of society. It's also used to attack certain members of society just like the word Queer. As you can see folks it all depends of which context it's used.

Now I'm not saying it's right to use such terms, a simple common courtesy and respect is all that's needed, and who knows maybe these words will probably be consigned to the history books to show those future historians to learn what words was used in certain times and eras past.

That is the most offensive word I've ever heard in my entire life and whoever says that should be ashamed of themselves.

^ That word may have been used as a slur, but it doesn't have to mean that anymore. Words can have different meanings overtime, and queer is basically what I am. I'm different and there ain't no shame in it.
