Chapter three
He carefully lifted her into his arms picking up her bag and putting it over is shoulder as he carried her away from the school. He had parked his car within a decent distance of where he and his ward were having their conversation, in preparation for such an eventuality. He gently laid her across the back seat, securing her with a kerusi, tempat duduk belt, resting her bag in the foot area in front of her. He then took one last scan around making sure nobody had seen what could easily have been mistaken to be a kidnapping. Satisfied no-one was around to see he took his place at the steering wheel and drove carefully to his base, his home, his selamat, peti deposit keselamatan place. As they neared he scanned the area to look for people who may perceive his taking an unconscious school girl from his car and taking her into his house as something that should be handled sejak the law. He realised he was selamat, peti deposit keselamatan to get her from the car to the house. He unclipped the seatbelt and gently lifted her up out of the car bringing her bag, keeping his eye out for other people, taking the final steps up to his door and opening it as quietly as possible as though the girl in his arms was merely sleeping. He stepped inside dropping the bag sejak the door and quickly moving into the living room to rest Rosie onto the brown worn out sofa where he had spent most his nights sleeping atau simply sitting in wait, waiting for the right time to approach his ward. He propped her head up with the single white bantal resting over the arm of the chair opposite. He then took a kerusi, tempat duduk in the chair looking over the girl he was destined to protect, noticing the serene look on her face, her fiery red hair framing her pale face, so pale it was almost translucent. He noticed the curve of her slightly parted lips, the rosy merah jambu tint. His eyes were fixed on her face, not realising when her eyes had opened to look at him. He was mesmerised sejak the beauty that emanated from her being. Her eyes searched his face, she was enveloped in a feeling of such familiarity. Seeing the same eyes, same hair, same soft curved mouth. Captivated sejak them as her mind wandered, asking what it would feel like to press her own lips against them. At this moment he snapped out of his trance like state.
“Rosanna, how are anda feeling now?? I realise this is an awful lot of information for anda to take in, in such a short period of time” he berkata with a voice filled with what she realised was concern and worry.
“urm, I…I…” her voice failed her again, her head filled with fury at her inability to form the right sentence, when finally she managed to muster a short utterance “ I need a drink of water”
“Oh, of course, I’ll get anda one right away” He jumped up from the chair as though he had been sat on something uncomfortable and strode out of the room, returning after a short moment. Rosie pushed herself into a sitting position as he came back in taking the glass into her shaking hands.
“maybe anda should wait a moment while your body readjusts itself” he berkata taking the glass back from her, placing it on the small meja, jadual in front of his chair and the sofa. She crossed her hands, then flexed them, spreading her fingers wide then forming a fist. She took the glass from the table, taking small sips, letting the cool refreshing liquid massage her throat as it went down.
“Feeling better now?” asked Alexander, with the same hint of concern. She nodded with a smile, not trusting her voice to work just yet. She placed the now empty glass back on the meja, jadual and stretched her arms and legs as though she had just woken from a restful sleep. She noticed how he watched each of her movements, his face with only a small tell of emotion, not enough for her to distinguish what emotion it was.
“Not to be a pain, but it’s getting a wee bit nippy in here, would anda mind putting the heating on atau something??” she asked with a still weak voice, pulling her legs up to her chest and wrapping her arms around herself, as both an attempt to keep warm and a protective barrier to help her in this unfamiliar surrounding. Again with this request he hopped up from the chair disappearing for only a short amount of time before he returned with a pale blue blanket in his hands.
“I’ve flicked the heating on, so it shouldn’t take long for the house to heat up but until then I thought this would help” he raised the blanket slightly. What he did seterusnya both puzzled Rosie and thrilled her. She had expected him to hand her the blanket so she could rap it around herself but instead he came up behind the sofa and draped it around her shoulders with the lightest of touches. As she reached to pull blanket lebih securely around herself, her hand met his. In this moment she saw a flash of imej of Alexander race through her mind, while he pulled his hand back swiftly. A look of sadness and apology crossed his eyes, those dark eyes which seemed to go on forever. She pulled her own hand back as though the touch had burnt her and rubbed it carefully with the other. Neither spoke for what seemed to her like a millennia. Both not knowing what words would be appropriate for the situation until the silence was broken sejak music. Muse’s ‘Assassin’ flooded the room quickly. They both turned toward the front door, Rosie jumping up from the sofa pulling the blanket around herself, while he stood watching her menyeberang, cross the room and retrieve her mobile from the front of her bag. She clicked the button and stared at the screen.
“It’s a text from my friend, she wants to know where I am. I told I would walk utama with her after school.” She paused for a moment gathering her thoughts “how long was I out??” she peered up from the screen to meet his gaze for only a perpecahan, berpecah second.
“oh, urm, I guess, about say two, maybe three hours, I had tried to wake anda but nothing worked so I left anda to sleep, I thought it was best for anda after our colourful conversation sejak the school.” his eyes refused to meet hers, darting from her phone to the floor.
“Well, that’s just, that’s just, bloody marvellous. What the hell do I say, ‘oh yeah some Rawak dude came to school to tell me I was in danger then practically kidnapped me and took me to his house’. I’m sure the fuzz would be intrigued sejak your stalker tendencies too!!” She exploded into a rant filed with frustration, anger and confusion, she began to shake and sob, her tiny frame looked so frail, he couldn’t help but rush over to her and envelope her in his arms.
“shhh, shhh, come on now, I know this is too much for anda to understand right now, but at least understand this, as long as I am here with you, nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing is going to happen to anda atau to anyone anda care about, do anda hear me??” he pulled her tear drenched face from his chest and looked her dead in the eye “ Rosanna Mellissa Edwards, do anda trust me??”
His tone was both sincere and strangely distant. They stood motionless for what seemed like a week, neither wanting to break the connection, the force between them that reassured them that if they stayed in each others arms nothing could harm them atau stop them from feeling this way, this homely, belonging feeling with the tinge of sadness and frustration. The only sound was the tick took of the clock on the dapur dinding and the occasional sniffle/whimper from Rosanna.
Ten whole minit had passed before they finally looked away from each other. Rosie lingered her arms holding his for a few saat lebih before pulling away and wiping her face on the cuff of her school jumper. She crossed the room back to the sofa and slouched down as though she had just been carrying a huge weight and was finally resting. Alexander went and sat back in his sebelumnya chair still watching her. Both took stolen glances at each other, not wanting to break the silence that hung so heavily in the room. They sat there both trying to work out what had just happened, looking at each other in a hope to see that the other had worked it out. Finally someone spoke.
“I do trust you” squeaked Rosie “that is why I am so scared, I know anda would never let me believe I was in danger if I wasn’t. I think that we need to sort this all out before we go any further, make sure both of us are fully aware of all necessary facts to make sure that if there is any way to avoid a situation we will know of it sooner rather than later.” she kept her eyes fixed on the table, afraid to rekindle the intense moment they had shared, although it took every ounce of her concentration and will to avoid eye contact.
“what is it anda want to know? I’ve told anda majority of what I know already” he berkata sombrely, maintaining the lack of eye contact.
“anything, something, how do I know?” her eyes began to fill with tears again, her body willing itself to run into his arms, into the place she felt selamat, peti deposit keselamatan “This is too much, I am only sixteen, I haven’t done anything significantly wrong, why would anyone want to hurt me?” the tears spilled over, retracing the tracks of her sebelumnya tears. Her whole being wishing he would alih closer to her, bungkus, balut his arms around her, his chin resting on bahagian, atas of her hair. Instead his eyes flicked up, not the eyes she had melted into, but new darker seeming eyes feverishly scanning the room, to focused to meet hers.
“what is I…..” she hadn’t managed to ask before he raised his long finger to his lips telling her to be quiet. She froze with fright, not able to breathe let alone consider speaking. He stalked silently to the window trying to peek through the gap in the curtains. The moment he had, he closed the sort distance between them at such high speeds that they fell to the floor with a dull thud. He held her so close to his chest. She felt as though she could feel his heartbeat, but when she laid her hand on his chest where it should be. She could feel only the gentle rise and fall as he watched the window, seemingly unaware of what she was doing. Yet somehow totally aware yet he did nothing to stop her. She held her hand to her own hati, tengah-tengah and could feel it beating like the footsteps of a sprinter. Then as she laid her hand against his chest, she felt nothing, not one beat against her sweaty palm. She opened her mouth to speak till his hand clamped over it. She could smell the rain on his skin, she could also smell of what seemed like roses, her mums favourite, the influence for her name. The mix of her mums favourite Bunga and her gran that had died two days before she was born. Her mum berkata it combined two of the sweetest things in the world and made something special. From what she had been told about her grannie Anne was the kindest soul there could be, another thing her mum berkata she inherited. As her mind wandered over her past she had forgot about her present situation until Alexander pulled his hand away and helped her up.
“Are anda okay? I’m so sorry I had to do that, I don’t know why but it felt like the only way” he explained checking her over for injury.
“Sorry, what were anda saying?” asked Rosie as though she had just woken from a pleasant dream. “oh yeah, don’t worry about it, I’m fine” she smiled at him allowing herself to make eye contact for a moment.
“Are anda certain?? I would hate to think I had hurt you, I just reacted, I’m so sorry” he berkata standing up and shifting away from Rosie quickly.
“Honestly, I’m fine, I am in no way broken atau bent out of shape. I promise” she tried to reassure him, though she could see in his eyes that he still felt guilty “Alexander” His eyes snapped to her face at the sound of her serious tone “I am perfectly, 100% fine. Do anda believe me??”
He nodded trying to make the agreement tunjuk in his eyes.
Her phone began to sing again breaking the tension in the room. She quickly silenced it and read the message quickly.
“My mum is like seriously worried, she thinks I’ve been kidnapped” she looked up and gave him a rye smile “I think I should go home”
“I could take anda if anda want me to??” he berkata trying to make up for his behaviour
“no, it’s okay, my mum would get freaked out if she saw some Rawak dude pull up to the house with her school girl in the passenger seat. I think I’ll take the bus, as long as anda point me to the nearest stop” she gathered her things up and headed for the door, she just wanted to be left alone with her thoughts.
“of course, it’s quite a walk so I shall accompany you, just to be on the selamat, peti deposit keselamatan side. I would hate to think that I had neglected my ward in any way” He took a kot from the pegs and gestured her towards the door, holding it open for her.
They both left the house and Alex locked the door whilst keeping an eye on Rosie. They set off towards the end of the jalan in silence, still stealing glances at the other. After a few minit Rosie tried to break the silence.
“How much further is it away??”
“just a little farther and then round the corner” he berkata with an almost sadness, though she could not figure the cause.
As they turned the corner they both tried to speak at once.
“Alex, I……..”
“Rosanna, I…….”
Their eyes met and then they both quickly looked away.
“You first” Gestured Alex in a gentlemanly manner.
“I just wanted to say thank anda for taking care of me, anda know, when I passed out and stuff. “ she continued quietly
“you’re very welcome Rosanna, I was just doing my duty” he berkata his face calm and emotionless.
Her hati, tengah-tengah skipped a beat as though he had just told her something far lebih terrible. She tried to keep the emotion from menunjukkan on her face. A few moments passed in silence until a bus pulled up.
“urm, this is my bus, thanks again” she hid her face not trusting herself to hide the irrational hurt she felt. “I’ll see anda again sometime” this was posed as an almost soalan as she tried not to get her hopes too high.
“Of course, I will try and stay inconspicuous for as long as I can. I will protect anda to the best of my ability Rosanna. Have a selamat, peti deposit keselamatan journey home” he concluded as the impatient bus driver sighed again.
“Thanks” Rosanna turned and paid her fare, taking a kerusi, tempat duduk near the window so she could keep her eyes on him for as long as she could.
She couldn’t place what she felt, she tried to Usher the feeling away so she could think clearly of the afternoon. As the bus pulled away her thoughts continue to drift.
He carefully lifted her into his arms picking up her bag and putting it over is shoulder as he carried her away from the school. He didn't seem... mad. Like he should have been. Like he had every right to be.
He stopped maybe a meter away from me. I glanced up, and saw the same look of indecision I had seen on his face the first day.
I had no idea what I was supposed to do. My life is not a perfect little story where happy endings are mandatory.
I didn't expect myself to sink to the floor against the dinding and begin crying. There just weren't words to say what I wanted to.
I didn't expect him to sit in front of me and put his hands on my shoulders. He forced me to to look up at him, and he said, "Tell me."

It works fast like a drug, when it’s shot through my veins,
And it lights up my fire, when it reaches my brains,
Irresistible tickle, in the depths of my chest,
I dissolve into ashes, and forget all the rest.
If anda make my hati, tengah-tengah dance, I will dance in your hand,
Give me my one desire, I’ll be at your command,
Constant rushes of sugar, swirling Warna and light,
There’ll be no troubled sleep, for this body tonight.
This one is short and sweet, sung from the perspective of someone who's willingly being taken advantage of, as long as he gets what he wants. Hence the double meaning of the tajuk "User," which could refer to to an addict, atau someone literally "using" another person for their own gain.

My brain is nowhere, my eyes are hungry,
Devouring the warm orange sky.
It slides down my throat like soup, and pools into my soul.
I skip mindlessly over the hay, with bits of straw kicked up in my stride,
Like a destructive beast, only unknowing.
My dance is like the leaves.
Red- my pace quickens into a mad, hot dash.
Orange- my footsteps slow into a rhythmic tango.
Yellow- I swirl lazily, as if lovestruck.
The Warna of fire, burning at different tempos.
The Warna of emotion, striking the hati, tengah-tengah under the skin.
The Warna of death, leaving with a few last powerful words.
Fall, without regret, having lived your best life,
And dance toward the sunset with high spirits!

In the darkness,
No one is here for me.
I feel lonely,
And my feet tremble.
The grads have gone,
Some my closest friends...
Remember the times that we had?
We let them slip sejak when things got bad.
Remember the times...
When we shared a sno-cone
When we cried together
When we laughed together
When we jumped in the pool
All in unison.
It's funny how I feel so much
But I cannot say a word.
I will remember you.
anda will always be in my heart.
anda have telah diberi me so many memories
To last.
anda are a handprint on my heart.
It cannot be erased.
anda motivate me.
anda are what I can do today.
anda are an amazing person.
anda are what I am today.
All that I am today is because of you.
anda will never leave my heart,
Even if anda do leave me in life.
No one is here for me.
I feel lonely,
And my feet tremble.
The grads have gone,
Some my closest friends...
Remember the times that we had?
We let them slip sejak when things got bad.
Remember the times...
When we shared a sno-cone
When we cried together
When we laughed together
When we jumped in the pool
All in unison.
It's funny how I feel so much
But I cannot say a word.
I will remember you.
anda will always be in my heart.
